Promensil® is for menopausal and post-menopausal women experiencing menopause symptoms. Promensil® is a patented (CA 2136233) natural health product (NHP) for relief of menopause symptoms. Each Promensil® tablet provides a standardized dose of 4 isoflavones extracted from natural source red clover hay ("standardized" means that each tablet is manufactured under very tight quality controlled standards to ensure the medicinal dose is the same as every other tablet and delivers the quantity of isoflavones claimed on the package – either 40 or 80 mg AIE depending on the Promensil® product). Promensil® is free from yeast, milk derivatives, wheat and corn starch, gluten, preservatives, artificial colours and flavours, and has no added sugar.
How does Promensil® work?
Isoflavones are phytoestrogens, which literally means, plant estrogens. Isoflavones are similar in chemical structure to the body's own estrogen, and when consumed in adequate amounts they are able to mimic some of the effects of estrogen to assist with maintaining health and well being. Isoflavones however are weaker than our natural estrogen, and are selective in their action in the body. Isoflavones supplement the needs of women over 45 when levels of hormones are declining.
Promensil® can have a positive impact on women's menopause symptoms and help maintain bone and heart health, in the following ways, taken directly from our Health Canada licenses:
Promensil® Regular Strength with 40 mg of isoflavones: may reduce severe and frequent hot flashes/flushes in post-menopausal women; helps to reduce Bone Density Mineral losses with adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D in post-menopausal women; may support cardiovascular health by improving arterial compliance (improve the elasticity of the arteries).
Promensil® Double Strength with 80 mg of isoflavones: helps reduce severe and frequent hot flashes/flushes in post-menopausal women; may reduce menopausal symptoms such as night sweats, sleeping disorders, nervousness, lack of concentration and vaginal dryness; helps to reduce Bone Density Mineral losses with adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D in post-menopausal women; may support cardiovascular health by improving arterial compliance (improve the elasticity of the arteries).
Promensil® Vitality with 40 mg of isoflavones, 500 g of elemental calcium and 140 IU of vitamin D3: may reduce severe and frequent hot flashes/flushes in post-menopausal women; helps to reduce Bone Density Mineral losses in post-menopausal women; may support cardiovascular health by improving arterial compliance (improve the elasticity of the arteries). Vitamin D helps the body to better absorb calcium. Adequate calcium as part of a healthy diet prevents bone loss and osteoporosis.
How to take Promensil®
Promensil® comes in tablet form and is taken orally. The recommended dose for women (menopausal/post-menopausal) is to take one tablet daily with food. To help relieve daytime symptoms, take Promensil® with breakfast. If night time symptoms are worse, take Promensil® with the evening meal.
Antibiotics may disrupt your gut flora and hence reduce the absorption of Promensil® via the gut. Eating yogurt may help to re-establish your gut flora and improve the absorption of Promensil®. H2 antagonists such as Zantac and Tazac as well as proton pump inhibitors such as Somac, Zoton and Nexium may also reduce the uptake of Promensil®. If you are currently taking the Oral Contraceptive Pill or Hormone Therapy, it is recommended that you consult your healthcare professional before taking any dietary supplement.
When will I see a difference?
While this can vary with the individual, most women notice relief from symptoms within 3-8 weeks. The response may vary with the individual. If you have had absolutely no change in your well being after 9 weeks then you should contact your doctor or call PharmaCare, as we may be able to suggest ways to improve the efficacy of Promensil® for you.
It is important that Promensil® be taken DAILY. It will not be effective otherwise. It's recommended duration of use is at least six months. Promensil® can be used safely for a long time. When visible symptoms such as hot flashes reduce or stop, the effects of declining estrogen levels are still affecting bone mineral density and cardiovascular health. Promensil® helps reduce Bone Mineral Density losses and improve arterial compliance.
PharmaCare has conducted clinical trials throughout the world to demonstrate the benefits of Promensil® for the alleviation of menopausal symptoms including hot flashes and feeling of well being. Promensil® trials have been published in scientific and medical journals. All studies were conducted by specialists in universities, clinics and teaching hospitals under Good Clinical Research Practice guidelines.
Information for your doctor
Download a one-page letter to take to your doctor at your next consultation. The letter advises your doctor how to access up to date clinical information and treatment guidelines on Promensil®.
This may be useful if you are already taking Promensil® and wish to discuss your treatment with your doctor, or if you are considering which menopause treatment suits you. It is important that your doctor is aware of the clinical support for Promensil®, so they can offer you the appropriate advice.
Can I change from HRT to Promensil®?
Yes you can, but you should not take HRT and Promensil® at the same time. The two therapies shouldn't be combined because of the potential risk of competitive inhibition (they may work against each other).
When you stop HRT, start taking Promensil® Double Strength daily for at least 2 months. The higher dose is recommended as it takes time for Promensil® to become effective (3 to 6 weeks) so there will be a period during the changeover that will feel uncomfortable as your menopause symptoms increase for a few weeks then begin to subside as Promensil® becomes effective. Make sure you take Promensil® every day with a meal to help it absorb into the body.
Can I use Promensil® if I'm still getting regular monthly periods?
Yes. Women can take Promensil® while they are still menstruating, in the time leading up to menopause. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding however should not take Promensil® without first consulting a doctor.
What is the difference between red clover products and between red clover and soy isoflavones?
Not all red clover products are the same. The leaves of the plant contain the highest amount of isoflavones. Red clover blossoms contain little or no isoflavones so products such as red clover tea will not provide any measurable isoflavone levels.
Red clover and soy are both legumes and belong to the same family of plants. The main difference is that red clover contains four active isoflavones whereas soy only has two. The extra two found in red clover are commonly found in other legumes such as chickpeas and lentils.

The Importance of Estrogen
Estrogens play a vital role in maintaining a woman's health and well-being over her lifetime. Around the age of 35, a woman's own production of estrogens may slow. This is a challenging time for many women and the maintenance of lifestyle, well-being and normal body function is important to the enjoyment of this stage of life. The effects of giving supplemental estrogens are well known. They help relieve the symptoms of menopause, maintain healthy bones, as well as healthy cholesterol levels. They maintain arterial wall elasticity, the feel and appearance of the skin, normal mood and emotions, and the ability to concentrate.
