Hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer studies – Is natural the way to go?

Peri-menopause can be a turbulent time in a woman’s life, and “sticking out” the symptoms doesn’t have to be the only option. When peri-menopause symptoms begin interfering with everyday life, it is time to seek professional help. Doctors have strongly recommended hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for many years as a way to balance fluctuating estrogen levels. It is important to use a combination of the two hormones as estrogen alone increases the risk of endometrial cancer.

Hormone replacement therapy has come under scrutiny within the last decade because of the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative Study results. The study was performed by the U.S. National Institute of Health and was based on the findings of 16,600 women’s experience with HRT over eight years. The study was stopped three years early because researchers found that the long-term use of HRT significantly increased the risk of breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, blood clots and urinary incontinence. On a positive note the risk of colon cancer and hip fractures were cut in a third.

The study determined that long-term use of estrogen and progestin increased a woman’s risk for breast cancer by 24%, heart attack by 29% and strokes by 41%. What this roughly means is that for every 10,000 women taking HRT in one year there will be eight more women with breast cancer, eight more will have strokes, seven more will have heart attacks, six fewer will have colon cancer and five fewer hip fractures.

When the study was released, over six million North American women were using HRT to relieve peri-menopausal symptoms. The Canadian Cancer Society recommended that, “due to the increased risk of cancer, women should avoid combination hormone replacement therapy for any reason other than to relieve severe menopausal symptoms that have not responded to any other treatment.”

There are treatments available that can help women manage their peri-menopausal symptoms without the risks associated with HRT. Recent studies suggest that natural remedies based on isoflavones, such as Promensil, are highly effective and cause fewer side effects. Legumes, the source of isoflavones, are not all created equal in terms of beneficial power for women. There are more than 1,000 types of isoflavones in plants, however only four have been shown to benefit women going through menopause: genistein, daidzein, formononetin and biochanin A. Most legumes only carry a few of the isoflavones. Soy, which is often used in natural supplements, only contains daidzein and genistein. Promensil, which focuses around red clover, contains all four isoflavones as well as ten to twenty times the quantity found in soy- the next richest source.

Red clover has been a popular medical treatment for everything from skin eczema to cancer. It contains all four isoflavones, making it an effective tool to regulate rapidly fluctuating estrogen levels. High levels of the hormone can be suppressed whereas the isoflavones are able to mimic the effects of estrogen your body naturally produces if levels become too low. Red clover is also a diuretic, helping the body rid itself of excess fluids, which is beneficial for women that experience water weight gain during menopause.

There are many treatments available to help relieve peri-menopausal symptoms, but it is important to consider the short terms benefits in relation to the long-term risks. Women are more vocal about their experiences, and demand treatment that is safe, effective and natural. Promensil’s extensive testing has proven that natural supplements can be just that and without the side effects associated with hormone replacement therapy. Menopause is natural and your treatment should be the same.

Menopause Symptoms

Every day 5,000 women begin menopause, and each will encounter it uniquely. With a large array of symptoms and various degrees of severity it is almost impossible to predict an individual’s experience. However there are some symptoms more common than others, for example 85% of women will experience hot flashes or night sweats. Here is a look at the most common symptoms of menopause.

Hot Flashes

Hot flashes seem to define the stereotypical menopause experience. The sudden, intense heat on the upper body can last thirty seconds to two minutes and raise skin temperature 6°C. While many women only have a couple per week, some might have dozens of hot flashes a day. It is believed that low estrogen levels affect a section of the brain known as the hypothalamus, the body’s thermostat, causing hot flashes. Unfortunately researchers are unsure why low estrogen levels would have this affect on the brain.

Hot flashes can be a major disruption; however with a little planning most people can limit the discomfort. Since women with hot flashes are more sensitive to hot and cold, dressing in layers offers options when you are not able to control the room temperature yourself. Diet also plays a large roll. Hot flashes have been linked to smoking, alcohol, caffeine and spicy food consumptions. Every woman is different so it is important to understand your personal triggers.

Night Sweats

Night sweats are closely related to hot flashes, so they share the same causes and triggers. The only difference is that night sweats occur when sleeping and can seriously alter the REM cycle, resulting in sleep deprivation. Exercise has proven to have an impact on the severity and frequency of all menopause symptoms, so a daily routine is crucial.

Mood Swings

Mood swings can be the most disruptive aspect of menopause, affecting women and their family and friends. Over 15% of women will experience mood swings during menopause. The general belief is that a hormonal imbalance is responsible for rapid change in mood. Most women found that by acknowledging a mood swing when they felt it coming on helped them regain control of their emotions. Exercise and twenty minutes of sun exposure also played a large role in mood swing management.

Disrupted Sleep

Poor sleep is not a natural part of aging and can significantly affect quality of life. Decreased estrogen levels make it more difficult to fall asleep in the first place, and achieve REM. Without a good night’s sleep the metabolism slows down and women can become prone to mood swings. Firstly it is important to consult a doctor to determine if sleep problems are not part of a more serious medical problem. For a better night’s sleep make sure the bedroom is cool, clean and clutter free with a notepad on the side table. The notepad is to write down any appointments or stress and help clear the mind before bed. Exercise and twenty minutes of sun exposure during the day help the body wind down before bedtime.

Sometimes careful planning is not enough to combat menopause symptoms and supplements are required. Many women prefer natural alternatives instead of the traditional hormone replacement therapy because of safety concerns that have come forth in recent studies. Supplements focused around isoflavones, such as Promensil, are highly effective in clinical trials.

Menopausal symptoms can begin years before menopause and last several years afterwards. Although only the most common symptoms are mentioned above, there are literally dozens of other possible symptoms women can experience. It is important to understand your own personal triggers to help minimize discomfort and understand when supplements may be required. Promensil’s extensive testing has demonstrated that a natural remedy can be effective, without the side effects associated with hormone replacement therapy. Because menopause treatment is all about making women feel like women, naturally.

Is Your Diet & Menopause Connected?

Anyone that has gone through, or is going through, menopause will understand the importance of estrogen. Estrogen is responsible for a woman’s overall well being, directly affecting her cholesterol levels, bone density and mood. Around the age of 35 a woman’s production of estrogen may begin to slow, facilitating the change to menopause.

The depletion of estrogen levels has a direct effect on a woman’s mental and physical health and has been linked to serious long-term health issues such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Recent studies suggest that these common issues associated with menopause occur more frequently in Canada, United States, Australia, New Zealand and Western Europe than in Asia, Central America and Mediterranean countries.

But why would the body deprive women of something so crucial to their health? The regional discrepancy of health issues linked to menopause suggests that the answer lies in the diet. The Western diet has shifted towards a more meat and dairy focused diet as opposed to the legume-based diet our ancestors and women in Asia, Central American and Mediterranean countries enjoy. Legumes are rich in isoflavones from the group phytoestrogen (plant estrogen), which are able to closely mimic the effects of estrogen that women naturally produce.

The Asian, Central American and Mediterranean diets consist of 30-50mg of isoflavones every day while the Western Diet contains only a few milligrams. You can see the connection when you compare women’s consumption of isoflavones vs. the frequency of hot flashes in women from various countries. Japanese women experience significantly less hot flashes than their European counterpart. Women from countries with diets rich in isoflavones, such as Asia, experience fewer hot flashes during menopause and have lower levels of osteoporosis.

All legumes are not created equally when it comes to isoflavones. There are more than 1,000 types of isoflavones in plants, however only four have been shown to possess significant individual and specific biological activity: genistein, daidzein, formononetin and biochanin A. Not every legume carries all four isoflavones beneficial to women. Soy only contains two: daidzein and genistein. Red clover contains all four isoflavones as well as ten to twenty times the quantity of isoflavones found in soy, which is the next richest source.

Red clovers are much more than a pretty face; they have been used in medicine for years treating everything from skin eczema to cancer. It is one of the few plants that contain all four isoflavones so it is able to regulate the rapidly fluctuating hormones of menopause. High estrogen levels are suppressed and when levels are low the isoflavones mimic the estrogen your body naturally produces. Red clover is also a diuretic, helping the body rid itself of excess fluids, which is beneficial for women that experience water weight gain during menopause.

Those looking for a natural alternative to estrogen replacement therapy have embraced supplements that are based on the isoflavone rich diet. Promensil provides the same amount of isoflavones as the typical legume-based vegetarian diet; eight times more than the average North American diet, all in one tablet. Based around the red clover to provide all four necessary isoflavones, Promensil users experienced slowed bone loss, less frequent hot flashes and night sweats and a general decrease in menopausal symptoms.

Women now have the option of a natural alternative when treating menopausal symptoms. Promensil’s extensive testing has demonstrated that a natural remedy can be effective, without the side effects associated with estrogen supplements. Because menopause treatment is all about making women feel like women, naturally.

How to Naturally Manage Your
Menopause Symptoms

Menopause. The word is synonymous with night sweats and hot flashes but the information seems to stop there. Although these are common symptoms, every woman experiences it in a unique way. The average age for menopause is 51, however most women will begin to feel a change physically, mentally and emotionally before they even begin to meet the definition of menopause.

Before officially entering menopause, estrogen levels decrease around the age of 35. Estrogen plays a large role in maintaining the health of nearly all tissue in the body, affecting bone density, cholesterol levels, skin quality, cardiovascular health and moods. Without sufficient estrogen, the body suffers from a hormonal imbalance. This period is known as peri-menopause and is characterized by hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, urinary frequency, vaginal dryness, irregular menstruation, mood swings, irritability, reduced libido and inability to concentrate.

Peri-menopause is not a direct path to menopause, as women often drift in and out of it over the course of several years. The severity and length of it has been linked to the amount of stress a woman has experienced over her lifetime and is happening at a younger age than ever before. To relieve symptoms, there are a variety of estrogen supplements and natural remedies available. Recent studies have found that natural supplements focused around isoflavones, such as Promensil, are highly effective.

Legumes, the source of isoflavones, are not all created equal in terms of beneficial power for women. There are more than 1,000 types of isoflavones in plants, however only four have been shown to benefit women going through menopause: genistein, daidzein, formononetin and biochanin A. Promensil, which focuses around red clover, contains all four isoflavones as well ten to twenty times the quantity found in soy- the next richest source.

Red clovers have been used in medicine for years, treating everything from skin eczema to cancer. Because it contains all four isoflavones it is able to regulate the rapidly fluctuating hormones of menopause. High estrogen levels are suppressed and when levels are low the isoflavones mimic the estrogen your body naturally produces. Red clover is also a diuretic, helping the body rid itself of excess fluids, which is beneficial for women that experience water weight gain during menopause.

It is important to help treat the visible symptoms of peri-menopause to help with the transition to post menopause. Not only are you helping to relieve the discomfort, but also prevent long-term invisible symptoms. These symptoms, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, can severely affect the quality of a woman’s life. Promensil has been proven to support bone density and cardiovascular health during peri-menopause as well as offer supplements specifically for postmenopausal women.

The transition to post menopause can be a long and somewhat frustrating journey, but there is help and support out there. Women are more vocal about their experiences, and demand treatment that is safe, effective and natural. Promensil’s extensive testing has proven that natural supplements can be just that and without the side effects associated with hormone replacement therapy. Menopause treatment should be about making women feel like women, naturally.
